Join an international research team working on a cutting-edge project to understand and predict how human activities affect biodiversity worldwide. You will help build the first global, high-resolution projections of human impact, using big data and advanced machine learning. This fully funded four-year position lets you explore big ecological questions and contribute to science that matters for our planet.

Your tasks

  • Expand and consolidate a large database of human impacts on biodiversity
  • Apply a modelling pipeline to generate global and continuous layers of human impact
  • Explore scenarios under different socioeconomic pathways and restoration targets
  • Work with modern geospatial machine learning methods to forecast biodiversity change
  • Collaborate within the Altermatt lab and with team members at University of Zurich and Eawag

What you bring

  • Master’s degree in Ecology, Biodiversity Science, Environmental Science, Quantitative Data Science, or a closely related field
  • Strong quantitative skills and proficiency in a programming language
  • Good understanding of ecological theory
  • Experience with biodiversity data analysis, spatial data, GIS, machine learning, or ecological modelling is highly desirable
  • Familiarity with literature synthesis, meta-analysis, open-science workflows, or large-scale data analysis is an advantage
  • Fluency in English (speaking and writing)
  • Motivation, enthusiasm, and ability to work independently
