Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain. Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems. The Aquatic Ecology Department (Eco) has a vacancy for a project on biodiversity-inspired lake modeling, linking processes from cells to ecosystems. The position is based at Eawag in Dübendorf, Zurich, in the Biodiversity & Ecosystem Functioning group, and is fully funded for 4 years.

Tasks

  • Work at the interface between phytoplankton trait data and mechanistic lake modeling.
  • Run controlled laboratory experiments.
  • Conduct field work to sample Swiss lakes.
  • Collect data to inform, parameterize and validate lake model predictions.
  • Collaborate with internal and international research teams, including lake ecosystem modelers.

Requirements

  • Completed master’s degree in biology, biodiversity, aquatic ecology, evolutionary biology, limnology or oceanography, environmental science or other related fields.
  • Understanding of lake ecosystems and phytoplankton physiology.
  • Experience running controlled and highly replicated laboratory experiments.
  • Training in molecular biology is valued.
  • Experience with field work is an asset.
  • Developed computational skills and comfortable in at least one coding language (R, Python etc.).
  • Enjoy dynamic teamwork and interested in working in an integrated fashion with other researchers.
