Join a joint initiative focused on integrated water management, working with WSL, Eawag, and Agroscope to study water storage in Swiss landscapes. Help develop knowledge for using water retention to balance flood protection, irrigation, and biodiversity, with your research based at leading Swiss research institutes and the University of Basel.

Your tasks

  • Operate hydrological models to study water storage across Switzerland and target river valleys in Aargau.
  • Explore ways to use nature-based water retention during floods to improve water supply during droughts.
  • Work with stakeholders like farmers and local decision makers to understand their needs and help guide decisions about drought and flood mitigation.
  • Publish your research results in scientific journals.
  • Work at WSL (Birmensdorf/ZH) and Eawag (Dübendorf/ZH), with regular exchanges at Agroscope (Reckenholz/ZH).
  • Receive supervision from scientists at all involved institutions.

What you bring

  • Master's degree from a technical university, with focus in environmental sciences, earth sciences, or applied mathematics.
  • Interest and experience in hydrological research with conceptual and physical models is an advantage.
  • Strong skills in statistical analysis of large datasets (geostatistics and time series).
  • Proficiency in R and/or Python.
  • High motivation to apply your knowledge to scientific questions and help with integrated water management and climate impact solutions.
  • Experience in writing and publishing scientific work is preferred.
  • Fluency in English for scientific work.
  • Fluency in German and a valid driving licence for stakeholder interaction are required.
  • Thesis will be affiliated with the Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Basel.
