Join a leading research project that explores how medieval farming shaped today's landscapes and biodiversity. You will be part of a collaborative team working across Europe to uncover long-term records from lake sites, using cutting-edge methods in organic geochemistry. This is a three-year, fixed-term position based at Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology.

Your tasks

  • Lead the lipid biomarker part of the MEMELAND project, focusing on faecal biomarkers to show evidence for grazing, manuring, and human fecal inputs.
  • Help validate animal sedaDNA records using independent biomarker evidence.
  • Use species-specific plant biomarkers, like miliacin and cannabinol, to detect crop cultivation and practices such as hemp retting.
  • Work closely with project partners from other universities in Europe.
  • Write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the group at meetings inside and outside the project.

What you bring

  • Doctorate in geosciences, environmental sciences, chemistry, or a related field.
  • Fluent English skills.
  • Strong background in organic geochemistry.
  • Experience with GC-MS is highly desirable.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize a diverse academic workload.
  • Collaborative approach to work, building effective relationships with project partners.
  • Proven ability to write scientific publications and present research.
