Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain. Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems. The Aquatic Ecology Department (Eco) has a vacancy for a project on biodiversity-inspired lake modeling, linking processes from cells to ecosystems.

Tasks

  • Participate in field work collecting wild isolates of phytoplankton.
  • Lead lab-based culturing and workflow development.
  • Use established workflows to culture wild isolates.
  • Support the running of highly replicated, controlled lab experiments.
  • Support the development of new lab-based assays.

Requirements

  • Well-developed skills working with phytoplankton or other microbes.
  • Proven experience with sterile technique.
  • Basic molecular biology training.
  • Interest in high content imaging (light, fluorescence and confocal microscopy) and automated image analysis is highly valued.
  • Completed training as a lab technician or hold a BSc or MSc in biology or a related field.
  • Skilled with standard molecular biology methods.
  • Familiar with cell biology, phytoplankton and phytoplankton physiology.
  • Experience participating in running controlled laboratory experiments.
  • Well-organized, able to clearly document work, reliable and enjoy working in a team.

The position is based at Eawag in Dübendorf, Zurich, in the Biodiversity & Ecosystem Functioning group. The project is an international collaboration between research groups at Eawag, Wageningen University, NIOO-KNAW, and the University of Rhode Island, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation Lead Agency process.
