Join a research project exploring the dynamics and variability of bedload transport in mountain streams, with a special focus on novel monitoring methods at the Erlenbach observatory. This role is part of a Swiss National Science Foundation project, starting in January 2027, within the Mountain Hydrology and Mass Movement research unit.

Your tasks

  • Investigate the dynamics and spatial-temporal variability of bedload transport in mountain torrents.
  • Focus on monitoring at WSL’s torrential observatory at Erlenbach using seismic nodes and/or fibre optic technology with distributed acoustic sensing (DAS).
  • Develop monitoring capabilities to observe bedload mobilization along a torrent reach.
  • Deploy a network of near-torrent seismic sensors to monitor variations in bedload activity.
  • Conduct substantial fieldwork, including outdoor sensor deployment, data acquisition, and maintenance of field installations.
  • Analyze time series data and interpret results using fundamental physical theories.
  • Publish scientific results in geoscience journals.
  • Work collaboratively within a dynamic research team.

What you bring

  • Master’s degree in a scientific or engineering subject.
  • Strong analytical skills in time series analysis and data interpretation based on physical theories.
  • Solid knowledge of a high-level programming language such as Python or Matlab.
  • Ability to handle large data sets.
  • Knowledge in seismic interferometry and/or machine learning is a plus.
  • Interest in fieldwork, including outdoor sensor deployments and maintenance of field installations.
  • Good proficiency in English.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • German language skills are an advantage for field campaign management.

What we offer

  • Opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in natural hazards and environmental protection.
  • Work within a diverse and inclusive environment that actively promotes gender equality.
  • Engage with a dynamic, multidisciplinary team at a renowned research institute.
