Join a joint initiative focused on integrated water management, where you will help develop model-based assessments of water retention in the landscape across Switzerland. You will work with leading research institutes to support sustainable use and protection of water resources, balancing human needs and ecosystem health.

Your tasks

  • Operate different hydrological models to study water storage at the Swiss scale and in major river valleys in the Canton of Aargau.
  • Explore options for local nature-based water retention to help during floods and improve water supply during droughts for various uses.
  • Interact with stakeholders like farmers and local decision makers to understand their needs and support decisions about drought and flood measures.
  • Publish your research findings in scientific journals.
  • Work at WSL (Birmensdorf/ZH) and Eawag (Dübendorf/ZH), with regular exchanges at Agroscope (Reckenholz/ZH).
  • Be supervised by scientists from all involved institutions.

What you bring

  • Master's degree from a technical university with focus on environmental sciences, earth sciences, or applied mathematics.
  • Interest and experience in hydrological research with conceptual and physical models are an advantage.
  • Strong background in statistical analysis of large data sets (geostatistics and time series).
  • Proficient in R and/or Python.
  • High motivation to apply your skills to solve scientific questions and support integrated water management and climate impact mitigation.
  • Experience in writing and publishing scientific work is preferred.
  • Fluent in English for communication; proficiency in German and a valid driving licence are required for stakeholder interaction.
  • Thesis will be affiliated with the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Basel.
