Join a research group focused on global biome dynamics and climate change impacts. In this role, you help map and analyze biomes worldwide as part of a project aiming to predict how ecosystems respond to global change. The position is for 18 months with the possibility to extend, and you will be part of an international collaboration at a leading research institute in Switzerland.

Your tasks

  • Collect drone-based (LiDAR, multispec) and ground-based (hemispherical photos, LAI 2200) measurements in the field for different biomes
  • Compile and analyze existing data from large databases for systematic differences in vegetation structure
  • Refine computer vision models to extract leaf traits and plant functional characteristics from photos above and below biome canopies
  • Analyze global databases of plant photos to extract functional properties using trained computer vision models
  • Characterize functional and structural properties of biomes and upscale this information globally using plant distribution data
  • Work closely with an active research group and international partners

What you bring

  • PhD degree in ecology or a related field
  • Strong skills in macroecology, functional ecology, and processing and analysis of high-volume and remote sensing data (especially LiDAR and multispec)
  • Experience in spatial modelling
  • Strong coding skills with R, Python, and GIT
  • Experience with deep learning tools, cluster computing, and/or fieldwork is beneficial
  • Ability to develop new ideas independently
  • Very good English skills, both written and oral
  • Curious, self-reliant, and a strong team player who values cooperation

What we offer

  • Work in a dynamic and supportive research group
