Join a pioneering research team focused on developing sustainable, resilient, and equitable urban energy systems. This PhD position is part of an international project that combines technology, policy, and systems thinking to address real-world urban challenges. You'll contribute to innovative solutions for future urban energy infrastructures.

Your tasks

  • Assess the operational feasibility and robustness of urban energy system designs informed by AI and multifractal planning approaches
  • Develop and apply optimization-based energy system models to analyze spatially coherent urban and energy configurations
  • Identify feasible operating patterns for electricity and heating systems at district and urban scales
  • Study how spatial characteristics and uncertainties, such as demand evolution and renewable generation, affect system performance and trade-offs
  • Combine analytical modelling with data-driven and AI-based methods for scenario generation and uncertainty exploration
  • Work with synthetic test cases and real urban case studies in Switzerland and France
  • Collaborate closely with partners in the FRACNET-CITY consortium

What you bring

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Energy Systems, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Physics, or a related field
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with optimization models and quantitative analysis methods
  • Familiarity with urban energy systems, energy infrastructures, or spatial modelling and analysis is an asset
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or similar
  • Interest in combining analytical modelling with data-driven or AI-based approaches
  • Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary research teams
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written); knowledge of German and/or French is an advantage
