A PhD student is sought from autumn/winter 2026 for a research project at the Chair of Earth Observation and Remote Sensing, Institute of Environmental Engineering, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - ETH Zurich. The project focuses on Multi-modal SAR for large scale rapid change observations in permafrost regions.

Tasks

  • Investigate and develop generic methods and algorithms in the context of multi-modal synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for the estimation of environmental parameters over arctic regions.
  • Utilize SAR as an active remote sensing technique for estimating surface features such as topographic heights, displacements, and quantitative bio-physical parameters.
  • Apply SAR methods to monitor infrastructure and permafrost-related subsidence in the arctic region.
  • Research retrogressive thaw slumps (RTS) and their impacts on ecosystem and hydrological equilibria, as well as their role in reinforcing climate change.
  • Use space-born approaches to monitor RTS due to the remote landscape.
  • Investigate TanDEM-X difference digital elevation models to detect RTS on pan-Arctic, watershed, and local scales.
  • Evaluate data from the TanDEM-X German Satellite mission to gain insight into surface processes.

Requirements

  • Hold a master’s degree or diploma in electrical engineering, geomatics engineering, geophysics, physics, or a related field with a background in digital signal processing and/or image processing.
  • Some experience in SAR data processing or another field of array signal processing is an asset.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Programming experience in Matlab, Python, C/C++, or equivalent.
  • Able and/or eager to develop and implement signal-processing algorithms in such programming languages.
  • Fluency in English (oral and written).
  • Willingness to work in a multidisciplinary and international research team.
  • Hold a valid driver’s license (European Cat. B).

Benefits

  • Professional development supported by ETH Zurich.
  • Public transport season tickets and car sharing.
  • Wide range of sports offered by the ASVZ.
  • Childcare.
  • Attractive pension benefits.
  • Inclusive culture promoting equality of opportunity and diversity.
  • Working and learning environment respecting the rights and dignity of all staff and students.
