The Chair of Infrastructure Management within the Institute of Construction and Infrastructure Management at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering is offering a doctoral position focused on developing uncertainty-aware methods and optimisation tools for robust railway intervention planning and resource forecasting. This position is part of the interdisciplinary ETH Mobility Initiative research project in collaboration with SBB.

Railway infrastructure provides significant capacity for the movement of people and goods, but interventions such as maintenance and renewal reduce or suspend this capacity. Decisions regarding the timing, location, and grouping of interventions, as well as timetable planning, must be made well in advance and under considerable uncertainty. The project aims to develop quantitative support for fact-based decision-making in railway infrastructure management, with emphasis on characterising and propagating uncertainties, developing robust optimisation methods, and integrating information within a geospatial decision-support environment aligned with ISO 55001 and UIC best practices.

Tasks

  • Develop uncertainty-aware methods and optimisation algorithms for robust intervention planning and resource forecasting in railway infrastructure management.
  • Characterise and propagate principal sources of uncertainty in intervention planning and resource usage across multiple time horizons and asset categories.
  • Extend mixed-integer linear programming models through stochastic and robust optimisation to compute robust intervention programs.
  • Contribute to the design of a GIS-based decision-support platform that integrates asset data, intervention plans, and uncertainty analytics.
  • Validate developed methods against historical and planned SBB corridor data.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in civil engineering, transport engineering, operations research, applied mathematics, computer science, or a closely related discipline.
  • Strong background in mathematical optimisation, especially mixed-integer linear programming, with experience in stochastic or robust optimisation and solid programming skills (preferably in Python).
  • Familiarity with uncertainty quantification, railway or infrastructure asset management, or geographic information systems is considered an advantage.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.
  • Knowledge of German is regarded as an asset due to collaboration with Swiss project partners.
