The Laboratory for High Power Electronic Systems (HPE) at the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering of ETH Zurich conducts internationally leading research on power electronic converter systems, essential for future energy distribution systems, renewable energy integration, traction applications, and electric vehicles. The laboratory also focuses on solid-state pulse modulators for medical applications and accelerators. For a new research project on Solid-State-Transformers for future PV and energy storage systems, a doctoral position is available to develop solid-state transformers with a focus on high-power medium-frequency transformers.

Tasks

  • Conduct doctoral research on modelling and optimisation of high-power Solid-State Transformers (SSTs), focusing on Medium-Frequency Transformers (MFTs).
  • Investigate high-frequency and high-voltage MFTs for PV systems and medium-voltage grids.
  • Integrate battery storage systems and control dynamic power flow between batteries and the grid.
  • Develop multiphysics models for losses, temperature, cooling, resonances, and electrical insulation.
  • Optimise core, windings, and cooling for improved efficiency, power density, and power transfer.
  • Develop and optimise SST systems and power electronic converters.
  • Integrate models into computationally efficient optimisation procedures and collaborate with other doctoral positions.
  • Design, construct, and experimentally validate MFT prototypes and converter systems.

Requirements

  • A diploma/M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering with excellent grades.
  • Fundamental knowledge of power electronic converter systems.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Willingness to fully commit as part of an international team.
  • Interest in detailed modelling and design of magnetic components and optimisation of power electronic systems.

Benefits

  • Become part of ETH Zurich, supporting professional development and contributing to positive societal change.
  • Commitment to a sustainable and climate-neutral university.
  • Numerous benefits, such as public transport season tickets, car sharing, a wide range of sports offered by the ASVZ, childcare, and attractive pension benefits.
  • A challenging and scientifically exciting full-time position in a dynamic, international team at a leading technical university.
  • Encouragement to participate in international conferences.
  • Competitive salary, excellent benefits, and outstanding research and laboratory facilities.
  • Inclusive culture that promotes equality of opportunity, values diversity, and nurtures a respectful working and learning environment.
