The Decision Sciences and Analytics group at ETH Zürich, led by Prof. Tu Ni, is seeking a doctoral student to study operational decision making with data science. The position focuses on developing experimental and causal methods for efficient and robust evaluation of new products, policies, and technologies in modern operational contexts. The research is mainly theoretical but connected to several industrial applications in online marketplaces.

Tasks

  • Develop new methods for experimental and causal evaluation relevant in real business contexts
  • Write high-quality papers and publish in top-tier OM journals
  • Work with industrial partners on implementing the methods if needed
  • Develop own research questions within the broader topic of data-driven decision making
  • Contribute to light tasks and responsibilities such as teaching and lab activities

Requirements

  • Hold (or will have completed at the time of appointment) a Master’s degree in statistics, operations, economics, or a closely related field
  • Excellent academic records and motivation to produce high-quality, policy-relevant research
  • Excellent quantitative skills, including statistics, optimization, and stochastic modeling
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience in working on real A/B testing is a plus
