Join a leading research center at the forefront of climate and Earth system science. You will help shape a robust data management framework for a new petabyte-scale data lake, making diverse environmental datasets accessible and valuable for the scientific community. Work closely with experts from ETH Zurich, the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre, and partner institutions to support cutting-edge research and data-driven discovery.

Your tasks

  • Identify Earth system observations that are important for interdisciplinary research
  • Curate data collections by checking quality, completeness, and scientific value
  • Create clear metadata and documentation to help others find and use data
  • Start building a platform to give users an overview of available data
  • Work with researchers in climate science, environmental monitoring, data science, and related fields
  • Collaborate with a diverse team of developers and researchers to run and improve the data platform
  • Support research projects that use multiple data sources
  • Use high-performance computing systems for data storage and to provide analysis tools for researchers

What you bring

  • Degree in data science, computer science, Earth or atmospheric sciences, or a related field
  • Knowledge of satellite data and remote sensing
  • Experience working with very large datasets (petabyte-scale), data management, and data quality control
  • Strong skills in programming languages such as Python, R, or Julia, and using scientific data libraries (like xarray, netCDF4, HDF5, Zarr)
  • Experience with workflow automation on high-performance computing systems
  • At least 3 years of interdisciplinary work experience (not including PhD)
  • Strong communication skills for working across different scientific fields
  • Beneficial: Experience in interdisciplinary environments, PhD in remote sensing or related field, experience with large atmospheric observational or model data, project leadership experience, user support, data documentation, and FAIR data principles
