The Chair for Physical Chemistry of Building Materials offers a PhD position focused on stone conservation, specifically investigating the mechanisms of contour scaling. This role is part of the collaborative project “Spatially graded 3D printing to elucidate contour scaling of building stones” and aims to elucidate the mechanism of contour scaling, establish on-site monitoring methods, and test possible treatments.

Tasks

  • Use 3D printed stones in the testing facilities of the Chair for Physical Chemistry of Building Materials to reproduce laboratory conditions simulating harsh weathering events affecting building stones on monuments.
  • Develop methods for rapid detection of contour scales on site.
  • Explore possible means of halting the propagation and/or formation of contour scales.
  • Collaborate with another PhD candidate at the Chair for Digital Building Technologies in the Department of Architecture.
  • Work with groups and field practitioners as part of a collaborative research environment.

Requirements

  • Keen interest or experience in heritage conservation science.
  • Master's degree in conservation science, material science, chemistry, chemical engineering, civil engineering, or conservation architecture.
  • Good experimental skills.
  • Excellent oral and written English.
  • Conversational knowledge of German is an advantage; willingness to learn German is required.
  • Very good communication skills and willingness to collaborate with other researchers.

Benefits

  • Opportunities to start an academic or industrial research career in cement and concrete technology, with a strong foundation in materials chemistry and rheology.
  • Networking opportunities through academic societies such as RILEM, industry connections, and internal ETH connections.
  • Flexible working hours and home office options.
  • Commitment to diversity and sustainability.
  • Inclusive culture that promotes equality of opportunity and values diversity.
