The Energy and Process Systems Engineering (EPSE) Group at ETH Zürich is seeking a doctoral student to experimentally characterize the thermophysical properties and separation processes involved with complex fluids from plastic recycling. The group, led by Prof. Dr. André Bardow, focuses on advancing sustainable energy and chemical process systems, developing simulation and experimental methods from the molecular to the system scale. This position is part of the ERC Advanced Grant DISC3Lab, aiming to create a validated discovery loop for sustainable chemical processes, particularly solvent-based recycling of plastics.

Tasks

  • Design, set up, and perform novel experiments using microfluidics, spectroscopy, and algorithm-driven lab automation to enable closed-loop, self-optimizing experiments.
  • Conduct initial experiments investigating phase equilibria and transport processes in liquid mixtures.
  • Work closely with a companion doctoral candidate focusing on predictive simulation methods.
  • Mentor and co-supervise student projects and theses.
  • Engage in various group and institute duties and activities.
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences.

Requirements

  • Meet the requirements for a doctoral program at ETH Zurich.
  • Hold an excellent Master's or diploma in chemical engineering, process engineering, mechanical engineering, energy science & technology, physical chemistry, or a related field.
  • Ideally have experience working experimentally, preferably in setting up experiments and using microfluidics and spectroscopy.
  • Interest and ability to develop model-based methods for experimental design and analysis.
  • Highly motivated to learn and apply modern experimental and simulation techniques.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English.

Benefits

  • Full-time position for the duration of doctoral studies, starting upon agreement with the earliest starting date of October 1st, 2026.
  • Supportive environment fostering professional and personal growth.
  • Join a dynamic, motivated, and interdisciplinary team of researchers with expertise in thermodynamics, process design, energy system optimization, and life cycle assessment.
  • Collaborative work with research and industry partners.
  • Inspiring environment addressing critical global challenges.
  • Opportunities for group discussions and collaborative efforts from the molecular to the systems scale.
  • Access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and experimental setups.
  • Development of critical thinking, data analysis, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Contribution to the academic community through publications and presentations at leading conferences.
  • Inclusive culture promoting equality of opportunity, diversity, and sustainability.
