The Robotic Materials group is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to work on light programmable stiffness for reconfigurable soft devices and robots. This 4-year PhD position is funded by an ERC Starting Grant and focuses on developing light-stimulated stiffness programming methods and their application in soft robotic systems.
Tasks
- Create methods to program material stiffness in-situ with light, aiming for high stiffness contrast (rigid-soft), fast transition (<1s), and small form factor (< mm scale).
- Characterize and develop theoretical understanding with multiphysics simulation.
- Develop, design, and fabricate an active soft robotic morphing surface for reconfigurable shape/texture camouflage.
- Develop, design, and fabricate reconfigurable soft robotic actuators for in-situ programming of actuation modality and force.
- Demonstrate applications as robotic/biomedical devices for real-world use through collaborations.
- Supervise master/bachelor students.
- Serve as teaching assistant for the robotic materials class.
Requirements
- MS degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields from a top-notch university.
- Strong track record of research in soft robotics, smart materials, or related fields, especially with experience working on variable stiffness materials and robots.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities.
- Passion for interdisciplinary research.
