The Chair of Engineering Geology at the Geological Institute is seeking a creative and motivated PhD candidate with a strong interest in fluid mechanics and numerical modelling. The position is fully funded for 4 years and is expected to start in September 2026.
Tasks
- Develop a new coupled solid/fluid mechanics-based numerical model to simulate the motion of debris flows.
- Incorporate novel field data currently being collected at numerous locations around the world to validate the new numerical model.
- Combine the numerical model results with field data to further understanding of the motion of debris flows.
Requirements
- MSc in Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulics, Engineering Geology, Geological Engineering, Geophysics or related fields.
- Strong background in numerical modelling.
- Interest in natural hazards.
- Motivation, creativity, independence, and ability to work in a team.
- Excellent English communication skills.
