The Energy and Process Systems Engineering (EPSE) Group at ETH Zürich is seeking a doctoral student to develop new prediction methods for complex fluids and separation processes involved in solvent-based recycling of plastics. The project aims to accelerate the development of sustainable chemical processes by linking advanced machine learning techniques with high-throughput experimental methods.

Tasks

  • Advance thermodynamically consistent prediction methods for fluid properties and/or separation processes by developing new, more general, and more reliable hybrid thermodynamic and data-driven predictive models.
  • Overcome current limitations in training data sparsity, quantification of model uncertainty, and poorly specified mixtures or separation processes.
  • Work in tight integration with a companion doctoral candidate focusing on advancing experimental counterpart methods.
  • Mentor and co-supervise student projects and theses.
  • Engage in various group and institute duties and activities.
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present them at international conferences.

Requirements

  • Meet the requirements for a doctoral program at ETH Zurich.
  • Hold an excellent Master's or diploma in chemical engineering, process engineering, mechanical engineering, energy science & technology, physical chemistry, or a related field.
  • Ideally, have experience in machine learning and methods to predict thermophysical properties and/or conceptual process design.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in English.

Benefits

  • Full-time position for the duration of doctoral studies, starting upon agreement with the earliest starting date of October 1st, 2026.
  • Supportive environment fostering professional and personal growth.
  • Access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and experimental setups.
  • Opportunities to engage in group discussions and collaborative efforts spanning from the molecular level to the systems scale.
  • Development of critical thinking, data analysis, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Contribution to the broader academic community through publications and presentations at leading conferences.
  • Inclusive culture promoting equality of opportunity, diversity, and respect for the rights and dignity of all staff and students.
  • Sustainability as a core value, working towards a climate-neutral future.
