The KOF Swiss Economic Institute at ETH Zurich is the leading institute for applied research in economics in Switzerland. The research group works at the intersection of economic research and AI, studying money systems and democracies, and building AI systems that engage with these domains for research, policy, and the public. The position offers the opportunity to pursue independent research on trustworthy and human-centred AI while contributing to the development of systems in this space.

Tasks

  • Conduct research on AI reliability, security, trustworthiness, and human-AI interaction, focusing on high-stakes settings.
  • Publish at top venues in AI and responsible AI research (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, FAccT, EAAMO, AIES, CHI, etc.).
  • Design, build, and iterate prototypes that consider real-world context, including user conditions and consequences.
  • Work hands-on with large language models: evaluate their behavior, improve reliability for concrete use cases, and integrate them into systems with attention to security, explainability, and human-AI interaction.
  • Contribute to the development of LLM-based systems, including prompting strategies, tool use, evaluation, retrieval-augmented workflows, and adaptation.
  • Design and run user studies to evaluate how people interact with the systems, in collaboration with other team members.

Requirements

  • A master’s degree in computer science, machine learning, HCI, or a related field.
  • Strong foundations in machine learning and familiarity with current AI tools and practices.
  • A solid understanding of large language models, especially their reliability, security, and explainability characteristics.
  • Familiarity with technical and human-factors aspects of human–computer interaction.
  • Ability to work independently, communicate clearly, and navigate open-ended research questions.
  • Practical experience with LLM APIs, open models, evaluation pipelines, orchestration frameworks, and related tooling (plus).
  • Familiarity with model adaptation, fine-tuning, or related optimization methods (plus).
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, MLOps or LLMOps, containerization, or production deployment (plus).
  • Frontend and/or backend development skills (plus).

Benefits

  • Internationally competitive working conditions at ETH Zurich.
  • Starting date in August or September 2026; initial contract for 18 months with prospect of extension for the normal four- to five-year duration of the doctorate, subject to satisfactory progress.
  • Opportunity to pursue a high-quality PhD at renowned institutions in a dynamic and collaborative research environment.
  • Standard salary rate for PhD students at ETH Zurich.
  • Membership in a large and vibrant community of economic researchers.
  • Opportunity to participate in numerous workshops and conferences spanning all fields of economics in Zurich.
  • Doctoral position at the intersection of computer science research and applied domains such as democracy and money systems, with visible social consequences.
  • Doctorate from ETH Zürich, supervised by Prof. Hans Gersbach and a computer science professor.
  • Embedding in an internationally recognized research environment with close ties to economics, policy, and public institutions.
  • Engagement with the broader research community working on responsible and trustworthy AI.
  • Connections across academia, central banks, and policy communities working on AI and economic systems.
  • Substantial room for initiative and shaping your own research agenda.
  • Potential opportunities to support continued use of developed systems beyond the academic project duration.
  • Inclusive culture, equality of opportunity, and respect for the rights and dignity of all staff and students.
  • Commitment to sustainability and working towards a climate-neutral future.
