The Chair of Transportation and Mobility Planning at the Institute for Transport Planning and Systems, Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (D-BAUG), is seeking a PhD candidate to focus on developing revealed and stated preference surveys to model passenger response to planned railway maintenance disruptions in Switzerland. The research aims to improve understanding of how maintenance interventions affect passengers and to guide decision-making regarding railway operations.

Tasks

  • Review the literature on the impact of railway disruptions on passenger response (short and long term).
  • Develop (longitudinal) revealed preference surveys and stated preference experiments.
  • Model stated and observed passenger response and obtain elasticities for the various effects of maintenance disruption on rail service quality.
  • Develop a methodology to assess the long-term impacts of experienced disruptions on trust and reputation of the railway operator and the effect on public support for railway investment.
  • Regularly interact with other research groups to align research outcomes.
  • Participate in ongoing research projects and support the acquisition of new research projects.
  • Contribute to teaching and examinations.
  • Author research papers in high-impact research journals and successfully author and defend a doctoral dissertation on the main research project.

Requirements

  • MSc degree in transportation, civil engineering, computer science, spatial planning, geography, geoinformation, psychology, economics, or an equivalent qualification (must have MSc certificate before starting).
  • Experience with discrete choice modelling and/or survey design.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.
  • Knowledge of German is regarded as an asset, given the collaboration with Swiss project partners, but not a hard requirement.
  • Knowledge of data analysis and/or programming and willingness to familiarize yourself further (e.g., R, Python, GIS software, Stata, etc.).
  • Enjoyment of scientific work.
  • Ability to self-motivate, self-organize and take personal responsibility in the fulfilment of tasks.
  • Good communication skills, ability to work in a team and good problem-solving skills.
