The Chair of Forest Resources Management (FORM) at ETH Zurich is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join a dynamic, interdisciplinary team focused on understanding, monitoring, modelling, and managing forests now and in the future. This position offers the opportunity to grow as an independent researcher while contributing to applied, forward-looking forestry research at the interface of research, teaching, and practice.

Tasks

  • Develop your own research ideas within the wider field of forest management and economics, building on or linking to remote sensing, decision support, and related areas.
  • Acquire, clean, analyse, and interpret data; prepare scientific manuscripts; contribute to non-scientific outputs; and present your work at national and international conferences.
  • Play an active role in developing new research proposals, including identifying funding opportunities, contributing as a PI, collaborator, or partner, and helping turn ideas into funded projects.
  • Contribute to existing and new courses in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Forest and Landscape Management, particularly Forest Economics.
  • Help students understand ecological, economic, spatial, and societal questions in forest and landscape decision-making.
  • Supervise student projects, including shaping research questions, developing methods, collecting and cleaning data, applying statistical approaches, and improving writing.
  • Support and sometimes lead the organisation of workshops, meetings, events, and other activities hosted by FORM and D-USYS.
  • Help maintain and develop scientific networks and professional alliances.
  • Further develop your own skills in project management, supervision, communication, leadership, and collaboration.

Requirements

  • PhD in forestry, forest sciences, forest economics, environmental sciences with a major in forest and landscape management, or a related field, providing solid knowledge about forests.
  • Strong interest in forest management and economics and enjoyment of working at the interface of science, teaching, and application.
  • Experience in developing research ideas, analysing data, writing scientific publications, and communicating results to different audiences.
  • Curious, methodologically strong, and ready to connect your expertise with the broader work of the group.
  • Enjoy teaching and supervising students.
  • Ideally, experience in university teaching, thesis supervision, course development, or applied educational formats.
  • Clear communication, constructive feedback, and a desire to help students grow.
  • Very good English skills required.
  • German skills are an asset, especially for teaching and exchange with Swiss practice partners.
  • Comfortable working in an interdisciplinary team, taking initiative, organising work independently, and contributing to a positive, respectful, and collaborative team culture.

Benefits

  • Varied postdoctoral position at the interface of research, teaching, and practice.
  • Engaged and supportive team environment.
  • Opportunities to contribute to the education of future environmental and forest professionals.
  • Room to develop your own scientific profile.
  • Opportunities to build a research portfolio, develop and acquire projects, publish, teach, supervise students, expand your network, and gain valuable experience in academic leadership and project development.
  • Initial contract for 3 years, with possible extension up to 6 years based on performance and funding availability.
  • Inclusive culture that promotes equality of opportunity, values diversity, and nurtures a respectful working and learning environment.
  • Commitment to sustainability and working towards a climate-neutral future.
