The Chair of Energy Systems Analysis (ESA) within the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT) at ETH Zurich is seeking a Student Assistant to support research and administration during the start-up phase of the Chair. The role also involves collaboration with the Laboratory of Energy Systems Analysis (LEA) at PSI due to the Chair holder’s joint appointment.

The ESA Chair operates at the intersection of engineering and economics, focusing on developing and applying energy system models to diverse energy systems and research questions. The group is led by Prof. Dr Russell McKenna and emphasizes the optimization and assessment of complex systems and infrastructures for environmentally and economically efficient design and operations.

Tasks

  • Support the ESA Chair with general research-related tasks for ongoing projects, such as literature reviews, data analysis, and reference management
  • Assist with energy system modelling depending on experience
  • Contribute to website design and management, and the creation and maintenance of wikis
  • Support ongoing teaching and research projects within the group
  • Assist with the strategic development of LEA at PSI and foster collaboration between ESA and LEA

Requirements

  • Currently studying for an MSc (or equivalent Master's degree) in a quantitative discipline such as engineering, informatics, or economics
  • Proactive, highly motivated, and well-organised
  • Ideally, experience in website design and management, wikis, and advanced Microsoft Office skills
  • Technical programming skills (e.g. Matlab, Python, Julia, GAMS) are advantageous but not essential
  • Interest in and understanding of energy transition and related topics is advantageous
  • Ability to speak and write clearly in English
  • Enrolled as a student at ETH Zurich or another university
