Join a leading Swiss research institute and help develop new ways to understand and manage nuclear accident risks. Work on innovative projects using graphical probabilistic models to improve safety in nuclear power plants. This doctoral project is a collaboration between the Risk and Human Reliability group and the Severe Accident Research group at the Paul Scherrer Institute.

Your tasks

  • Design and carry out an uncertainty analysis study for severe accidents in nuclear power plants, including running accident simulation codes like MELCOR and MAAP.
  • Develop and test different Bayesian Network models using various learning and quantification algorithms for surrogate modelling.
  • Show how these models can be used for two main cases in Probabilistic Safety Assessment: checking the impact of uncertainties on outcomes for model validation, and using findings to improve accident progression models and their success criteria.

What you bring

  • Master's degree in nuclear engineering or another engineering field (such as mechanical or chemical) with knowledge of nuclear systems.
  • Experience with several accident computational codes, especially MELCOR.
  • Ability to use computational programming tools (such as Python, R, or Matlab).
  • Familiarity with machine learning techniques or causal discovery algorithms is a plus, but not required.
  • Very good written and spoken English skills.

What we offer

  • Work in an interdisciplinary, innovative, and dynamic environment.
  • Receive systematic on-the-job training and access to personal development opportunities.
  • Enjoy a strong focus on vocational training and a supportive work culture.
  • Modern employment conditions and on-site infrastructure to help balance work and personal life.
  • Work at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, Switzerland.
  • PhD degree awarded by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ).
