The Graduate School of Social Sciences (G3S) at the University of Basel provides the institutional framework for all graduate programs within the Department of Social Sciences. The working languages are English and German. Three start-up scholarships (CHF 32'000/12 months each) are available for the next academic semester, beginning in April 2027. The selection process follows the guiding principles on diversity and inclusion of the University of Basel, which aims to be a family-friendly, equality-oriented, nondiscriminatory and accessible university promoting diversity in all its dimensions.

Tasks

  • Develop a research proposal for submission to a funding body to acquire financial support for the remaining duration of the PhD project.
  • Carry out an independent research project in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Engage with current debates in the social sciences.
  • Submit a funding proposal as a condition for the second installment of the scholarship.

Requirements

  • Hold a Master's degree in one of the fields of G3S with a final degree of at least 5.0 according to the Swiss grading system.
  • Background in a discipline of the Department of Social Sciences (e.g. anthropology, cultural anthropology, middle eastern studies, political science, sociology, gender studies) or in interdisciplinary fields represented at G3S.
  • Dissertation projects must analyze current dynamics of social change, preferably focusing on Conflicts, Migration, or Resources.
  • Highly motivated to conduct independent research in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Vivid interest in current debates of the social sciences.
  • At the time of application, confirmation from a supervisor must be available.
