The professorship will be hosted at the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) and affiliated with one of the departments or institutes of the Faculty of Science at the University of Bern. The position offers the opportunity to build on the Centre's profile in sustainability sciences and practice, maintaining and further developing its standing as an academic partner for policy, society, private sector and administration.

Tasks

  • Manage complex inter- and transdisciplinary research organizations.
  • Provide organizational and strategic leadership for the Centre for Development and Environment.
  • Build on and further develop the Centre's profile in sustainability sciences and practice.
  • Maintain and enhance the Centre's standing as an academic partner for policy, society, private sector and administration.
  • Shape transnational research partnerships, particularly with countries in the Global South.
  • Secure third-party funding for academic research and research-based implementation.
  • Lead and inspire interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teams.
  • Engage in knowledge transfer and foster cooperation with national and international implementation agencies.
  • Travel regularly to CDE's partnership regions in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Requirements

  • PhD in a relevant field of sustainable development.
  • International recognition in research for sustainability transformations.
  • Strong record in management of complex inter- and transdisciplinary research organizations.
  • Proven skills in organizational and strategic leadership.
  • Extensive experience in shaping transnational research partnerships, particularly with countries in the Global South.
  • Proven track record in securing third-party funding for academic research and research-based implementation.
  • Cooperative leadership style and intercultural competence.
  • Experience in knowledge transfer.
  • Outstanding management and communication skills.
  • Ability to inspire and lead interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teams.
  • Familiarity with Swiss and international science and development policy.
  • Recognition as a trusted partner for national and international implementation agencies.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Command of at least one of Switzerland's national languages and familiarity with its academic system are an advantage.
