The fellow will have the opportunity to play a key role in the IN/AT-SYNC JWST large programme targeting the atmospheres of sub-Neptunes in resonant systems. The position offers a large fraction of protected time for independent research.

Tasks

  • Apply Bayesian statistical methods to astronomical datasets.
  • Model exoplanetary transits.
  • Extract spectra from JWST timeseries data and retrieve abundances.
  • Help obtain further JWST transmission spectra of sub-Neptunes.
  • Contribute to the project goals.
  • Assist with teaching at the University of Bern.
  • Possibility to directly supervise Masters projects and provide mentoring to existing PhD students.

Requirements

  • Expertise in applying Bayesian statistical methods to astronomical datasets.
  • Experience modelling exoplanetary transits.
  • Deep knowledge of atmospheric physics (e.g. chemistry, radiative transfer).
  • Proven track record as an independent researcher.
  • Expertise extracting spectra from JWST timeseries data and retrieving abundances.
  • Theoretical expertise in connecting sub-Neptune interiors and atmospheres is beneficial.
